I have over 20 years experience as a psychotherapist and counsellor, supervisor and teacher in a variety of settings with individuals, couples and families dealing with a wide range of issues.
My approach is broadly psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, but I also draw on other approaches such as CBT and Mindfulness depending upon what might be helpful.
Having trained originally in psychology, I began my career in the NHS working with individuals and families recovering from traumatic brain-injuries and psychotic episodes, before training as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with the Arbours Association.
Following several years as counsellor and supervisor working in higher education, and as Head of the University of Hertfordshire Counselling Centre, I went on to become Clinical Manager for a residential Therapeutic Community in London for people with difficulties such as self-harm, suicidal thoughts and psychotic episodes. I was also Chair of the Arbours Association Training Programme in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, with a special interest in the impact of contemporary culture, society and language on identity.
I now work in private practice in Royston as a psychotherapist, consultant and supervisor with both couples and individuals, offering both long and short-term sessions. I am also the Founder, consultant psychotherapist and CCO at Rareminds, the UK's first specialist mental health charity for people impacted by rare, genetic and undiagnosed conditions. I speak regularly at conferences, running workshops and training days for groups of medics and clinicians, counsellors/psychotherapists, and specialist patient groups.
I also teach and examine externally for a number of counselling and psychotherapy trainings, including The Counselling Foundation (St Albans), the Arbours Association (London) and the Philadelphia Association (London).
I also co-facilitate residential weekends in Dorset on ‘Living with Dying’ , using art, cinema and group discussions to explore how awareness of our mortality can impact helpfully and positively on our life choices.
I am a member of the UKCP, AAP and the COSRT and practice under the UKCP Code of Ethics and Practice. I hold full professional indemnity insurance, an enhanced CRB check and am a fully accredited UKCP Supervisor.
